Today is Liam's birthday....sigh....I am both excited and a little sad today. My baby is one. Chris and I tried to have this baby for 4 years and now he isn't even a baby anymore. He is in full toddler mode. He runs around the house chasing the cats, flushes the toilet while I am still sitting on it, eats the hand sanitizer bottle that I keep forgetting to move, and pulls all of the toilet paper off the roll. My baby is growing up.
I thought that I would write about the day he was born while the memory is still fresh in my head.
I was 4 days overdue and sick with the worst flu of my life. I was absolutely miserable. I wanted to be healthy before he came so I was glad that he took his time and passed the due date. I went to the doctor the day before and was finally feeling better. I begged the doctor to induce me but the nurses in the delivery ward were swamped so the best he could do was to schedule an induction for the following morning. Chris and I went home and started getting everything ready for the next day. We went to sleep and around 2 am the contractions began. I had 5 contractions that came about every 4 or 5 minutes. Then they stopped. 15 minutes had gone by and nothing was happening, so Chris and I laid back down in bed and turned off the light. As soon as my head hit the pillow, so did the contractions. They were insanely intense and coming every 3 minutes. We immediately called Chris' mom to come over and watch Maddy while we started getting ready to leave. The pain was pretty bad and the contractions were right on top of each other. Every time one would come I would grab something, bend over and start breathing heavily. Chris was running around the house doing little things but whenever he heard me groaning, he would come running over and start massaging my back, then go running all around the house doing more stuff. I managed to get dressed but not much else. Chris didn't want to wake Maddy so he lifted up the garage door and pushed the car out. I was having contractions about every 2 minutes by the time Chris' mom Cris got to our house so we rushed right out the door when she arrived. Our house is less than 4 minutes away from the hospital and on the drive I had already had another 2 contractions. Chris dropped me off at the front door and parked the car. When we got inside the pain was so bad, I could barely speak. We managed to get to the room, I put on the gown, and dropped in the bed.
This is probably a good time to tell you that I had planned a natural childbirth.... We went to the Lamaze classes and I packed up all of my 'comfort items' in a bag. I had a calming c.d., a picture of Madeleine for a focal point, and even brought a deck of cards to help keep me focused. Well as soon as I laid down in the bed, my contractions were 30 seconds apart which really didn't give me enough time to get used to the pain before it intensified. Chris was sitting next to me helping with my breathing and I think halfway through the first 'he he hoo hoo' I looked Chris in the eyes and said to get me an epidural fast! I felt very defeated but didn't care enough to 'sit out' the pain. While we were waiting for the anesthesiologist to arrive I was screaming bloody murder and pulling at any limb of Christopher's that came withing range of my hands. I was even tearing his ears from his head while screaming louder than I thought possible. The guy came running in and had to time his injection with my contractions. I was having one right when he was halfway in and told me very seriously to hold as still as humanly possible. That was the hardest thing I had to do all night!! The anesthesiologist had to give me a partial spinal block just to make sure the drug would take effect in enough time so after about 4 minutes, I couldn't feel a thing below my waist. I was happy as a clam after that! My mom and sister arrived shortly after and we were all sitting around chatting. The nurse couldn't get a good read of the baby's heartbeat so she decided to put a monitor on his head which of course broke my water. By about 6 a.m the nurse told me that I needed to start pushing. She didn't expect me to push so well so after the third push she left the room. I was still doing my thing until about 6:50 when she came back in and decided to check on my progress. She seemed very shocked at how much I had done because the baby was coming out and the doctor wasn't even there. Another nurse went running out as the first nurse put her hand down on his head and tried holding him in. I was still a little sick and was coughing. The nurse told me I would have to stop coughing quickly because it was pushing the baby out. The doctor ran in and at 6:54 a.m. our little Liam Kingston was born!
They placed him up on my chest and I cried and cried at how beautiful he was. He weighed 8lbs. 1oz. and measured 21 inches long. He was SO worth the wait! After 4 1/2 years of wanting another baby, our little creation was snuggling in my arms! Maddy came soon after and we all hugged each other as a perfect little family of 4.
Over the past year Liam has learned to crawl, walk, and even run. He grew six teeth. Ate his firsts foods. Said his firsts words 'dada', 'mama', 'sissa', and 'WOW'! Had a few accidents. Cried, laughed, giggled, and even growled. He sleeps through the night. Plays all day. And is the most wonderful baby in the whole world! Happy 1st Birthday Liam Kingston Bogus. Mommy and daddy and big sister Maddy love you with all of our hearts!
